Conventions, expos, meetups and massive events are great opportunities for photographers and videographers to gain exposure and attract potential long-term clients.
Of course, you know it takes a specific set of technical skills and qualities to be successful in this field, BUT before we dive in, let me just say: I'm not going to give you a rehash of the same old technical tips you've read a million times.
Instead, we're going to focus on the seven key traits that every successful photographer and videographer needs to have in order to thrive in the fast-paced world of conventions, expos, meetups and massive events.
Make people feel comfortable!
This is key to capturing great photos and videos, especially when working with important individuals like CEOs or celebrities. It's natural for people to feel self-conscious or uncomfortable in front of a camera, so it's critical to establish a friendly and approachable demeanor to put them at ease.
Don't be afraid to crack a joke or share a personal story to break the ice and create a relaxed atmosphere. For me, it always works to ask where are they from, how are they feeling, and if it's their first time here.
It's also helpful to give clear directions and provide feedback throughout the shoot to ensure everyone is on the same page. You know... even the biggest public speaker can feel awkward in front of a camera, and it's your job to make the experience as enjoyable and stress-free as possible!
Don't rush things.
Yes, you should be able to adjust your settings to match the lighting conditions and capture high-quality images and videos... however, no matter who you're working with, whether it's a high-profile CEO, or a well-known speaker, it's important not to let the pressure of the situation cause you to rush through the process.
While technical skills are undoubtedly crucial, so are time management skills! It's easy to get caught up in the moment and forget about seemingly small details like checking your battery or ensuring your flash is set up correctly. That's why it's always a good idea to have a checklist handy and take a few moments to set up your equipment properly before jumping right into the shoot.
Trust me, taking a little extra time at the beginning can save you a lot of it when editing your footage. You can even set up your gear on the floor at home before leaving to avoid forgetting something before you pack everything up. Remember, capturing the perfect shot is worth the extra time and effort!
Watch your body language.
A warm smile and open body language can go a long way in your clients feel comfortable and at ease. You want to be professional, but not so stiff that you come across as unapproachable. Your posture, facial expressions, and behavior have a significant impact on how your clients and subjects perceive you.
And regarding that, here's a little pro-tip: When you're shooting, PLEAAASE avoid using your cellphone. It's fundamental to give them your full attention when you are working, so you don't miss any important moments. Shoot now, TikTok later.
Be kind!
Conventions, expos, and massive events can be hectic and fast-paced, but that doesn't mean you should let the pressure get to you. As a photographer or videographer, it's essential to maintain a friendly and approachable manner at all times, whether you're shooting or just mingling with your client.
People hired you for a reason, and being kind and patient can help ensure that they'd call you back for future events. Plus, showing kindness can also make the experience more enjoyable for you, making all the hard work feel more rewarding.
So, when someone suggests something that you don't necessarily agree with, take a deep breath, put on a smile, and approach the situation with understanding and a positive attitude.
Go above and beyond.
While it may seem like extra work and no one likes to work for free, suggesting new shots or footage can make a huge difference for the client and set you apart from other professionals. Never be afraid to use your creativity and suggest shots that you think would add value to the project.
You don't want to be seen as just a mediocre videographer who simply does what they're asked to do. By taking the initiative and suggesting new ideas, you'll not only make the client happy but also improve your skills and portfolio.
Never, ever, ever, like never, miss a deadline.
Your clients trust you to deliver on time, and failing to do so can have serious consequences. If you want your time to be respected, you need to respect others' time as well. Time is a valuable asset, and no one likes to have it wasted.
Make sure to set realistic deadlines (DO NOT promise to have the pictures edited for tomorrow if you don't even know how they look on your computer) and prioritize your workload accordingly. If you find yourself falling behind, communicate with your client immediately and find a solution that works for both parties.
Meeting deadlines is not only a sign of professionalism but also a way to build trust and long-lasting relationships with your clients.
Be thankful!
As the event comes to an end, don't forget to express your gratitude to the client, but also to anyone else who helped you during the event. Take the time to personally thank them for the opportunity to be a part of their event, and for choosing you as their photographer or videographer... and why not connect on LinkedIn!
Showing gratitude not only helps build a positive relationship with the client, but it also shows that you appreciate the work you do and the opportunities it brings. Keep in mind, return business is important and being thankful can go a long way in securing future work. So, take a moment to be grateful, smile, and let the client know how much you enjoyed working with them.
Now, let's Get to Work.
Massive events can be an amazing way to showcase your work and get yourself out there. Not only that, but you'll get the chance to meet and connect with other pros in the industry, and maybe even score some new clients.
This is an excellent chance to immerse yourself in your industry, boost your skills, stay up-to-date with the latest trends and get some serious experience for your professional portfolio, making you an attractive candidate for future job opportunities!
Good luck out there!
